Long Island Sea Bass Fishing

Captain Joey Bud Russo and Ritchie Beiber from Howard Beach N.Y. were doing some fabulous bottom fishing in early part of October of 2004. They were fishing Off Sandy Hook area at Scotland Light. They were targeting Sea Bass and Blackfish. The Sea Bass were running up to 4 lbs. and the Blackfish were up to 6 lbs. The fall and early winter months provide some of the best bottom fishing you could ever want.

The Black Sea Bass occurs along the Atlantic Coast of the United States from Cape Cod to Florida, The Black Sea Bass populations along the East Coast have been in the decline for over three decades. The Black Sea Bass is predominantly a bottom-feeder, although it will occasionally strike at plugs, jigs, or lures. Bait fishing with strips of squid or fish is one of the most productive fishing methods to target Sea Bass. The New York State Record Sea Bass weighed in at an amazing 9 pounds and was caught by Sal Vicari, from Bronx, NY on 10/10/93.

Blackfish are also know as Tautog. The state record Blackfish weighed an incredible 19 pounds and 12 ounces. This awesome fish was caught by Jim Burgon from Riverhead, NY on 08/22/92 Fishing season on Blackfish is from October 1 through May 31. Up to 10 fish per day may be taken. The size limit is 14 inches.

Blackfish can be found from Nova Scotia, Canada to South Carolina. They live along the coast in rocky areas and may be found near pilings, jetties and wrecks. Blackfish are commonly taken at fishing reefs in the Atlantic Ocean just south of Long Island. Usually anglers catch fish from 1.5 to 3 pounds. Blackfish will feed on crabs, clams and worms as bait.

Saltwater Regulations can change quickly so keep up to date and check the Saltwater Fishing Regulations before every outing so as to be aware of any sudden changes.
