The date was August 18, 2004. the place was Lake Ontario at Oak Orchard. Raymond Martin of Elmira, N.Y. was fishing aboard the BUC-A- ROO The two nice salmon in the photo were taken on Spin Doctor Rotating Flashers with no-see-um Fly run behind a Dipsy Diver set out at between 150 and 200 feet. These flashers are amazing! It is unbelievable how hard and fast the salmon will slam the flies pulled behind these attractors. You can't argue with something that works that good. Just make sure you have some in your tackle box for your next outing the results are incredible. Good sized Brown Trout were also hitting the flies as well. What will they think of next!

Here is what a great day of fishing on Lake Ontario is all about! Raymond Martin and Dave Criss had a very memorable day boating these kings and having battled and lost several more. It is awesome to see the fishing returning to the once famed glory it had

It is awesome to see the fishing returning to the once famed glory it had. We would like to thank those who have taken the time to participate in the pen rearing projects which are in part responsible for the great salmon fishing we are now enjoying in the Western Basin of Lake Ontario

Oak Orchard Salmon Fishing

Sometime in mid August the salmon start to move in and stage off shore preparing for the fall spawning run which depending on the weather can start in the first week of September. These are some of the largest fish of the season, because they have been feeding ravenously all summer. In the lake they will still hit a wide variety of plugs and spoons how ever once they enter the streams they seem to become more intrested in getting upstream and taking care of bussiness.

Migrating salmon will still hit a fly or lure if it is presented properly and it triggers an instinctive strike, but they are no longer actively feeding. As the water cools the brown trout and steelhead will follow the salmon upstream as well. This is the time most shore anglers eagerly await. All fisherman are on equal footing now. A good pair of waders and a nice spinning or fly rod is all you need. This fantastic stream fishing will last until late November for browns, steelhead and salmon.

Trolling for trout and salmon in Lake Ontario is fantastic during the month of August. Later in the month the fall LOC Derby will start and run through the labor day weekend. This is the biggest weekend for the lake and the last outing of the summer for many. If you would like to book a charter for the fall derby book early as most captains will be booked solid for the week. Prizes are awarded for each catagory Salmon, Lake trout, Steelhead, and Brown Trout. There are two seperate divisions one for adult and one for youngsters. Daily prizes are also awarded.
